High Langside Farm, Craigie

Project type

Extension and Alterations

Project Phase

Complete

Situated on top of Craigie hill in Ayrshire, High Langside Farm enjoys fantastic views over the countryside, with Ailsa Craig being a focal point. The client wanted to add a sunroom where they could enjoy the views and their garden all year round rather than just during the Summer months.

The existing traditional ‘white house’ with surrounding stone built steading is a prominent feature within the landscape. In order to let this remain prominent, the extension was designed to provide a clear contrast while referencing the existing building forms and material palette on the farm. While the expressed gable and slate roof reference the existing house, the large openings are taken from the more modern barn on the site. Like the barn, the sunroom is a modern edition to the original farm steading and as such is finished in black timber cladding to continue the contrast the barn portrays, allowing the new additions to be read independently while complementing the existing house. The choice of vertical timber cladding was influenced by the modern agricultural buildings in the Ayrshire countryside while also tying into the existing barn doors on the steading.

In response to the Client’s brief, the sun room has been designed to open to the garden visually and physically. The glazed gable maximises the views out to Alisa Craig, while bi-fold doors allow the room to flow out onto the wrap round patio, which due to its raised level, provides views over the surrounding hedge from a seated position.
